The essential guide to patios in Muskoka

Vacationing in Muskoka does mean a lot of barbequing, but sometimes even die-hard cottagers look for a bar or restaurant patio with a lake view and a break from steak. Here are this summer’s hottest patios in Muskoka.

Turtle Jacks Muskoka, Port Carling

I have to say I’m partial to this patio for brunch. Turtle Jack’s has one of the largest brunch menus in the area including “Muskoka Eggs Benedict” and an Avocado Toast with a picante twist.

If lunch or dinner are your patio preference, their lunch and dinner menus are extensive and give shoppers in Port Carling a break…for a beer and a burger on one of the larger patios in town overlooking the river.

Tulo’s Taqueria Muskoka, Port Carling

If you are boating in the Port Carling area and want a great summer patio, Tulo’s Taqueria offers this. Tulo’s took over the spot beside Duke’s where Grand Electric used to be. While not GE (they are apparently looking for a new location for next summer), the margaritas flow and the tacos are fresh. And the docking is easy.

Crossroads, Rosseau

Every summer, the patio at Crossroads expands and with good reason. The food here is considered the best local food by those in the know. Worth braving Julie’s crankiness and the variable service.  On Thursdays, there is great live jazz music on the stone patio.
On Thursday to Sunday — 3 pm to 9 pm, there’s a Raw Bar & Grill, featuring cocktails, oysters, shrimp,  smoked trout & more!  Saturday nights feature New Brunswick lobster dinner. And every night, Chef Richard’s food is local and delicious but you can taste his French perspective.

Call ahead for reservations at 705.732.4343 to make a dinner reservation or you will be disappointed, even on a week night. And we all know that I consider their pies to be the best (second only to Don’s Bakery Wild Blueberry pie), so ask to take one home, especially the strawberry rhubard and the peach pie. And the carrot cake! see below

Riverwalk Restaurant, Bracebridge

Overlooking the waterfalls on the shores of the Muskoka River, Riverwalk Fine Dining Restaurant has been consistently recommended by WHERE Magazine and recently won the Reader’s Choice Award for Best Fine Dining Restaurant. This Mediterranean-inspired dining room, features an open kitchen allowing full view of your meal as it is being prepared, and you the opportunity to chat with the chef’s at work. Menus change to reflect seasonal ingredients but current features include house marinated salmon and free- range Muskoka chicken. Dock of the Bay, Gravenhurst

Enjoy the summer weather and sitting on Dock of the Bay, What can be more perfect to have nice music come with it. Every Sunday and Monday live music in month of July and August 6:00 – 9:00 pm. The menu here is gourmet meals prepared with only the freshest produce. Chef Darren says, “We ensure the quality of our dishes with the quality of our ingredients.” Good to hear…and the wine list is extensive too.

Windermere Pub & Patio

A favourite for locals and Windermere resort guests alike, this patio has a great view of Lake Rosseau, and menu hits from local fish and chips to burgers to calamari to poutine and lots of tasty local brews as befits a pub in a grand old hotel. There is live music every weekend for those who want to sit back and listen, or get on the floor and dance the night away!

Pie at Clevelands House, Lake Rosseau

Monday nights are the best at Pie at Clevelands House, because for the price of a pizza you can watch the best water ski show in Muskoka. So pick you your kids at Cleveland’s House camp and head for the top of the boathouse. It has the best vantage point and SWS Watersports puts on a great show.

Water’s Edge, Lake Jospeh Club, Lake Joseph

watersedge resto

And finally, our last stop on the patio tour is one of the best: the Water’s Edge at Clublink’s Lake Joseph club has it all: live music, good caesars, pizzas, burgers, sweet potato fries and you can order from either the inside restaurant menu or the bar menu. They are very accommodating here, have lots of healthy options and when you’re done your round of golf or your shopping in Port Sandfield, there is plenty of docking space to pull up by boat or park your car. Cheers!
